European airport security queues, October 2026
From October 1 to 20, 2026, the average security wait was under 10 minutes at all 16 European airports in this report that publish waits in minutes, and the highest figure for a typical hour was 18:00 at Copenhagen, at 13.3 minutes (Copenhagen publishes narrow ranges such as 3 to 5 minutes, and this report uses the top of each).

Key findings
- 13.3 min
was the average wait at 18:00 in Copenhagen, the highest busiest-hour figure at the 16 airports that publish minutes (20 days, 1,074 readings). Copenhagen publishes narrow ranges such as 3 to 5 minutes and the report uses the top of each, so its figures run a little high. Copenhagen also had the most hours averaging 30 minutes or more, 18 of its 480. The longest was Sunday, October 11, 18:00, at 42.9 minutes.
- 9 of 16
airports that publish minutes had their busiest hour before 10:00 local time, among them Stansted at 04:00, Manchester at 05:00, Dublin at 08:00 and Dusseldorf at 09:00. Copenhagen and Amsterdam Schiphol peaked in the evening, at 18:00 and 19:00.
- Under 10 min
was the average over all hours at every airport that publishes minutes, from 1.0 minute at Munich to 9.2 minutes at Berlin Brandenburg, where 11:00 averaged 12.1 minutes.
- 96.8%
of Heathrow’s readings from October 7 to 20 were in its lowest range, under 5 minutes. 8 of the 24 airports publish only ranges like this, so their figures are the top of a range and are listed apart. Frankfurt (88.3%), Madrid (89.9%) and Barcelona (84.8%) were mostly in their lowest range too.
- 17 of 24
airports have readings on all 20 days. Dublin’s feed stopped on October 12 and East Midlands’ on October 18. Each weekday falls only two or three times in the window, so the day-of-week figures are a weak guide.
Average wait by hour of day
Each bar is the average of every reading in that local hour from October 1 to 20, on one scale from 0 to 16 minutes (dashed lines at 5, 10 and 15). The brightest bar is the busiest hour; the faintest bars are hours with readings on fewer than 10 days, which never count as busiest or quietest. Hover a bar for its figures.
Airports that publish minutes, busiest hour first
Copenhagen publishes narrow ranges such as 3 to 5 minutes and Berlin a low and a high figure; both are shown here at the top figure, which runs a little high.
Airports that publish ranges
These bars show the top of each range, so a flat line at 5 means the airport said “under 5 minutes” nearly all day. They are not comparable with the minute figures above.
Busiest and quietest times at each airport
Times are local. “Daytime” is the hours from 06:00 to 22:00. “Hours 15+ min” counts the hours in the window whose average was 15 minutes or more, out of the hours with readings. The longest single hour is one date and hour, not a typical one.

October 1 to 20 holds three of each weekday except Wednesday, which has two. Some airports miss days (Dublin has readings only to October 12), so treat this table as a hint, not a pattern. The longest day at each airport is in bold.

Coverage gaps
- Amsterdam Schiphol: 18 of 20 days. No readings on October 3 and October 11.
- Stockholm Arlanda: 17 of 20 days. No readings on October 3 and October 11 to 12.
- Barcelona-El Prat: 16 of 20 days. No readings on October 3, October 11 to 12 and October 16.
- Dublin: 12 of 20 days. No readings on October 13 to 20.
- East Midlands: 18 of 20 days. No readings on October 19 to 20.
- Gothenburg Landvetter: 17 of 20 days. No readings on October 3 and October 11 to 12.
- Madrid-Barajas: 16 of 20 days. No readings on October 3, October 11 to 12 and October 16.
- Some days have fewer than 12 hours with readings: Amsterdam Schiphol (October 2, October 12 and October 18); Stockholm Arlanda (October 2, October 13 and October 18); Barcelona-El Prat (October 2, October 13, October 15 and October 18); Gothenburg Landvetter (October 2, October 13 and October 18); Madrid-Barajas (October 2, October 13, October 15 and October 18); Munich (October 10 to 11). They are included; with fewer readings, they count for less in the averages.
- Other European airports, among them Paris Charles de Gaulle, Paris Orly, London Gatwick, Rome Fiumicino, Vienna and Lisbon, are not in this report: Lufthaven had no readings from them in October.
- Lufthaven recorded no fast-track lanes at these airports in October, so the figures are for the standard queue. Munich’s business lane is shown apart in the checkpoint table.

Methodology and coverage
Source. Each airport publishes its own security wait on its website or app. Lufthaven reads those figures through the day and keeps every reading with its checkpoint and time: most airports every 10 minutes, Copenhagen about every minute, Heathrow every 3 minutes, Amsterdam, Barcelona and Madrid every 5, and Helsinki every 30 (Finavia publishes half-hour averages). The wait is what the airport says, not a measurement of Lufthaven’s own. How each airport publishes it is in the table below.
Window and date. Local dates October 1 to 20, 2026, at each airport, in the airport’s own time zone. Read from Lufthaven’s database on October 21, 2026 at 07:44 UTC with read-only queries; the range shares come from the raw readings of October 7 to 20, as raw readings are kept for 14 days.
What the figures are. An average is the mean of every reading in the group, across the airport’s main departure checkpoints, so a checkpoint or hour with more readings counts for more. Passport control, arrivals and staff lanes are left out. Where an airport lists one checkpoint under two names (Copenhagen’s Terminals 2 and 3, Bergen’s and Stavanger’s central security) it is counted once; Dusseldorf’s English and German names for each control are joined. A busiest or quietest hour needs readings on at least 10 of the 20 days. 159,241 readings from 58 checkpoints at 24 airports are behind the airport figures.
Limits. Airports measure differently: some publish a projected wait, some a maximum, some a range, so compare an airport with itself across hours before comparing two airports. Ranges are stored as their top figure, so those averages run high; Copenhagen’s narrow ranges and Berlin’s high figure are stored the same way. Helsinki reported zero in 74.9% of its readings from October 7 to 20 and Munich in 67.0%, which keeps their averages low. Munich’s highest hour is 03:00, while most of its daytime hours average under a minute; Lufthaven has not found out why, so read Munich’s hourly figures with care. The MAG airports (Manchester, Stansted, East Midlands) cap a lane at 60 minutes. Twenty days in October is one stretch of autumn, not a whole season.
